What is the PTE Core Test?

PTE Core (Pearson Test of English – Core) is a computer-based English proficiency test designed specifically for Canadian economic immigration and work purposes. It evaluates real-life English skills needed for daily communication, workplace tasks, and social interactions.

PTE Core is approved by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) for use in Permanent Residency (PR) applications under economic classes.

Modules in PTE Core

Speaking & Writing

Tasks include reading aloud, repeat sentences, describe images, summarize written text, and email writing.

Duration: 40-54 mins
No. of Ques: 28-36

Reading

Tasks include reading comprehension, multiple-choice questions, and reordering paragraphs.

Duration: 30-35 mins
No. of Ques: 13-18

Listening

Tasks include summarizing spoken text, multiple-choice questions, and filling in missing words.

Duration: 30-35 mins
No. of Ques: 17-22

Test Format and Timing

  • Total test time: Approximately 2 hours 
  • Delivery: Fully computer-based at a Pearson-approved test centre 
  • Scoring: AI-based and unbiased, providing fast and accurate results, usually within 2 business days 
  • Acceptance: Approved by IRCC for economic immigration programs
